Southern Home Show and IKEA!!

I mentioned here that I won tickets to the Southern Home Show.  I never win anything so I thought it was awesome and a great excuse to head out of town for the day!  My friend Jenn met me there.  We were giddy just to see each other and didn't care too much how the show was.  Here are a few of my must haves from the show.

There are a few things I would have left with if at all possible...

1.  A Suspension Chair (or 4) from BH System.

It was seriously the most comfortable place I have ever put my tush!  And they were beautiful.  Can't you just picture yourself with a cup of coffee, reading a magazine, watching your kids play.....  baaahhaaaaa!  Yeah right... but still fun to try to imagine!

2.  Carved Rock Sculpture from Eric Moore Designs.

He carves these all himself with rocks he mainly finds (there is only one kind of rock he buys).  They were just unbelievably beautiful!!!  I know the perfect person who will be getting one of these as a gift.  But he/she may or may not read by blog so I will say no more!!!

So I took the next couple pictures with my i-phone.  The quality it bad and I know nothing about the vendors, also bad... but they are inspiring!

Who wouldn't want this in their yard?  Tulips + Sculpture = Yes, please!

This would be minus the canopy for me... but, the orange and blue together is perfectly fresh and the monogram pillow.... I'll take it!  I am from the South after all!  I will monogram anything possible!

To feed my monogramming obsession... it might actually be a bad thing if I had one of these...

And finally, Jenn posing for me in an Ikea setup (at a fake laptop).  This would be perfect for the random spot in my playroom.  I would add a desk rather than table for the kids to do homework at one day (planning ahead!).  I would have the cabinets in glossy white, and I would hide endless amounts of toys and craft supplies.

Don't we all need a day away with friends?!?!  So blessed to not only have great friends but an awesome husband who understands that I am a happier person when I get to recharge... even if it is only a couple times a year!

Foyer Reveal

My foyer is finished and I can't wait to share it with you. In the scheme of things, this room has come together rather quickly.  I hope you enjoy the pictures of my new space!

View looking down from my balcony.

Before

Unfortunately I did not have the budget to replace this ugly chandy!  A new one  is definitely on my wish list!  But until then....I guess I will have to keep looking past it.

I love the new wall color! I painted the walls Wheat Bread by Behr.  I have used this color in a couple other rooms, and I love the way it plays gray to beige.  It is the perfect GREIGE.  Before all of my trim blended into the walls, but now the trim pops!

From this view the room still looks really bare, I guess that means I will need to continue to reveal this room at a later date.

I brought back in the dresser and mirror.  They fit well in the space, and with my tight budget of $1200, I needed to reuse, and re- purpose a couple items. I am still looking for a pair of matching lamps to put on the dresser, I live in a little town with few shopping options, sometimes I find it is best to be patient and wait for the perfect find, and not force the first thing I find to work.

Before

I normally have white orchids in this over sized silver punch bowl, but my hubby came home with 3 beautiful purple orchids, he is just so sweet, how could I take them back because they don't match my new carpet?! Sometimes good design has to take a back seat to a sweet hubby!

I bought this beautiful silver-plated punch bowl at an estate store about a year ago for $85!  I loved it from the moment I saw it.  The inside of the bowl is scratched up, so eventually I will need to have it re- silvered but for now it makes the most gorgeous planter!

I have a confession to make, things don't stay in one place too long in my house.  I wrote this blog post a couple weeks ago, and tonight my guy surprised me with three beautiful "Dreamsicle" orchids.  They look fantastic in the foyer with my rug.  I snapped this pic. with my iPhone, at night...sorry! It was just too good not to share.  As you can see the arrangement still needs a little work!

As a funny little side, while I was working on arranging these beauties Grandma was eating a cutie orange, it took me a moment to realize that although the orchids look like a dreamsicle, they don't smell like a dreamsicle.  I might hide a bowl of peeled oranges under the dresser just to mess with guests!  Heehee! It really is the little things in life isn't it.

We purchased this rug in Farmville VA, at Greenfront furniture.  Greenfront is quite an experience.  They are known to have the largest selection of Persian rugs in the United States and at the best price.  Imagine rooms full of  thousands of rugs.  It can be a bit overwhelming.  It is hard enough to find a rug that I like, but I am trying to let my husband be a part of our design decisions.  Sometimes I really struggle with this.  I have an idea of what I want a space to look like, I have planned and thought about my choices for days.  Then I tell him, and sometimes my vision and his do not line up.  He can be my most difficult client! :) But with that said, this is his home too, and he needs to feel comfortable in our space, so when his preference and mine don't line up, that is okay, I need to just keep on readjusting the plan. We chose a rug with the main background color as coral, so the foyer would flow into the livingroom.  Here is a picture of my formal living room that was taken over the holidays.

Can you see the coral in my livingroom rug? Walls are Pale Smoke, another Bejamin Moore color; and a favorite of Kandi and mine.  She recently painted her playroom in the same color.  Playroom Reveal

I pulled this settee in from another room.  I have always loved this piece of furniture but I just did not have the right place for it until now. I am really struggling with its new skirt.  If you are a frequent reader of our blog, you know that some of our projects work-out, and some need to be thrown out.  I think this skirt is headed for the door!  Let me show you what it is covering.

Isn't this fabric horrible!  Talk about 1970s!  I made the skirt because as the new cushion shifts around on the bench, the deck and all it's 1970's glory peaks out for an unwanted visit.

Here is the bench with out the skirt.  I am sorry about the quality of the photo I took this picture at night. I made a new cover for the cushion, and I think it might be time to take this little lady off to my upholstery shop to have the deck updated so I can rid myself of the 1970s once and for all.

It was a sunny afternoon, so I snapped a quick pic of the settee.

A few new throw pillows.

I love this pillow.  I made it from a vintage monogrammed hand towel.  I especially like the little ruffles!  I think Kandi would approve.  She has a thing for ruffles. If you are new to our blog check out her post Roses and Ruffles Pillow.

Finally a little art for my walls.  I don't think one can ever go wrong with a pair of vintage bird prints. As you saw in an earlier picture, this space will not be fully complete until the rest of my walls have some jewelery too.  I look forward to sharing this space with you as I continue to add and change it in the future.  Thanks for coming on this journey with me. Now that this project is finished hopefully I can focus on My Little Man's Makeover!

Metal Basket Pendant Light

Last time Rebekah and I were out shopping at The Screen Door I found this super cool vintage basket for around $20. Industrial style is all the rage and I am a fan too! I brought it home and my husband said it was an old golfing range ball bucket which to me made it even cooler.  Am I the only one who buys something cool and unique, gets it home, and then cannot figure out where to put it?!

It started out in Gray's room with stuffed animals in it.   Not good enough!

I even tried it in the bathroom with toilet paper in it.... uh, yeah, not good enough...

On my trip to Charlotte to the Southern Home and Garden Show we snuck out a little early and headed to Ikea! I told my husband I would be home by 5:00 and in the interest of enjoying myself to the fullest I pulled in the driveway at 4:59! SO  MUCH   FUN!!!  You will eventually see a few project using little goodies found there but when I stumbled upon this little $3.99 item I knew exactly what I was going to do with it!!

Ikea HEMMA Cord Set

And it really was $3.99!  That is just ridiculously cheap.  I had to go ahead and buy two just in case I might need one again in the future.  I knew I needed something more than just a regular bulb and remembered seeing this vintage style bulb last time I was at Home Depot.

I had to put this picture in because these bulbs are hard to photograph and I couldn't get its cool factor to come through in my pictures!  At $8.97 it cost more than both my new cords put together but I do think it was worth it!  It gives a perfect soft glow that is needed when you have an exposed bulb.

Here is all you need to know for this little project.  Make sure the bottom of your basket has an opening large enough to fit the end of the plug through or that you are able to make an opening.  That's it!  Your cord will come with hooks for the ceiling and these nifty little doodads to hold the cord in place at the exact height you want it. Those people at Ikea think of EVERYTHING... and did I mention for $3.99!
My cord is run right behind t curtain and plugged in behind it which worked out perfectly to hide it.
This was about a 5 minute project and I feel like this is definitely good enough for my super cool vintage range ball basket!

It couldn't be more perfect to light up this little reading nook in Gray's room.  There is a pretty serious amount of plaid in this corner but it doesn't bother me at all!  I would change this dino rug out for an awesome chevron print but we can't have it all!

In a stroke of good luck for me my in-laws have graciously offered to keep BOTH OF MY KIDS this weekend!  They are more awesome than you might imagine.  I will miss my dear sweet children greatly... seriously, no sarcasm at all (especially after Harper pulled every single article of her clothing out of her drawers today... I thought she was sweetly playing babies in her room... they needed cleaned out anyway...)
 Good thing she's cute!!

Instead of taking a trip or sleeping all weekend we are getting wild and painting our hall!  We are wild and crazy I know!  Wanna come hang out?  It does have at least 350 paint swatches on it so its necessary. Who knows, maybe I'll post more pictures of Will with crazy bed head and holey T-shirts.  Fun times!

A Sneak Peak at my Little Man's Room and the Owl Winner!

We want to announce the winner of our Owl Friend Give away, but first I want to catch you up on my week.

Unfortunately, I did not meet my deadlines this past week.  My little ones were kind enough to share an awful stomach bug with me.  Yuck!  So unfortunately my deadline to share C's new room with you is going to be pushed back a few weeks.  That's right, a few weeks.  Thanks for your patience. At least I am on track with my foyer makeover, a project I am tackling at the same time.  As you know remodeling is rarely ever a smooth process.  Do you remember that dream headboard I ordered from Tues. Morning for $250?

Well my Cyber Monkey stole it!  I really do think I have a computer curse on me!  Tuesday Morning has no record of me placing my headboard order, and to top it off, that headboard is now sold out!  All I can say is my budget is in serious trouble.  I have been looking online for other options, so if y'all have any ideas send them my way...I am looking for a simple upholstered headboard. Kandi is pressuring me to make my own....if I get desperate enough, I might be tackling yet another project for this room!  Please send me headboard options!

Since I can't share my full remodel with you, I thought I would give you a little sneak peak at a corner in C's room.  Here is one of my Owl Friends on C's newly reupholstered chair.
I love modern elements mixed with traditional hints in a child's room!  Don't you?!.  I bought this chair for C's room a few months back.  I loved its lines. And it's price tag, $35! The fabric was old, torn, and ugly so I new I would be taking it in for a redo.  I originally had it reupholstered in a great red fabric.(Sorry for the lack of before pictures, but I had this chair originally redone before I started photographing my every project. Then I was in such a hurry to meet this makeover deadline that I took the chair off the the upholstery shop and forgot to get a quick before pic.)As I was saying, the red fabric just did not look right with its black legs.  You know how you think you are going to love something, but it is just a little off?  Well it was just a little off. Thankfully I have a really laid back hubby who supports my crazy ideas, so he only half rolled his eyes when I asked him to help me reload this chair into the car and take it back to the re upholstery shop!  I still have not told him that it cost Woven Home another $175, to have it recovered.  (I bought the fabric as a close-out/flat fold for $3.50 per yard.) Pretty great price, but that still adds another $20 on so I am really at just under $200 for this chair.  Quite a big hit on my $1000 budget, but I think this chair was totally worth it.

I could not resist this orange giraffe throw blanket, from Tuesday Morning ($39).  It is made from bamboo, and is unbelievably soft!  It does not make up for my missing headboard, but it is a step in the right direction!

I made this owl friend specifically to match his room. Here is a link to my Owl Friend Tutorial. Do you see the curtains behind the chair?  I have been working on those for the past few days.  This is where I am going to save big on my tight budget.  Honestly if I can give you any advice, when it comes to decorating, if you can sew, then SEW!  Anyone can sew.  Don't be intimidated! I saved $125 per panel (I need 4 panels, so that is a savings of $500!) because I made these curtains my self. Even with that savings, I still had to pay for all other materials, (don't forget lining runs $7 per yard and you will need the same number of yards of lining as your front material).

I had to make a "be mine" pillow for his room.  I know that this may seem like a Valentine's Day thing, but isn't that every mother's wish, for her child to be her little sweet heart?  I know I will have to let go of him someday, but he is only 3 so the way I figure it I still have a few more good years left.  These pictures are just a little teaser on what is to come.  I promise I am working hard to finish this project, and share the full reveal with you!

I want to congratulate our Owl winners!  I asked Jacob to pick the winner this week.  He was asked to pick a number between 1-24.  I thought this would be a good exercise for my kindergartner.  After choosing numbers 90, 75, 28, and 50 he settled on 6 because his birthday was last week, and you guessed it, he turned 6! So congratulations Elizabeth, you are our lucky winner!  Okay in the fullness of disclosure, I am going to have my hubby pick an additional winner, because you see, I have a feeling the Elizabeth, is non-other than my older sis!  Crazy how that worked out!  Thankfully my hubby passed kindergarten, and on his first guess picked 24! So we are going to have two winners this week.  My big sis Liz, and Ariebellsmimi.  Please email me your orders!

Thanks!

Rebekah
