A Wedding Pillow

Today I want to share with you the pillow project that has been keeping me so very busy.  I am not complaining.  I am happy to be busy.

We are headed into Wedding Season, so I created these sweet Wedding Pillows for my sale last week.  My inspiration was carved initials in a tree. There is something so sweet, simple, and lasting in seeing a couple's initials carved into a tree.  Each pillow is monogrammed with the couple's first initials on the front, and then in a small heart on the back of the pillow is the couple's wedding date.

I used homespun linen to create this pillow, with a beige embroidery thread.  Homespun linen is linen is fabric that was weaved by hand 80-120 years ago by European women at their home looms.  Homespun linen is a rare find, so if you want to recreate the look, using a new heavy weight linen will also work.

These pillows are approximately 25 inches long by 17 inches high.  Because of the size, a standard down pillow will work as the form. They are the perfect size for a bed, or couch.

I would love to hear what you think about this pillow.

Thanks for joining me today!

Long Lumbar Pillow Tutorial

A couple weeks ago I showed you C's new extra long lumbar pillow.  It was created out of a need for color in his monochromatic room.

Today I will share with you the steps I took to make this pillow.  As I said in my last post, this project is really not that expensive if you are able to sew, and if you can find a fabric you love, at a great price.  This pillow cost me less than $20 including the down pillow form.  However, if you were going to have one custom made, the cost would be well over $100 and depending on the work room you choose, perhaps even a couple hundred dollars.  As always, if you have any questions please ask me at the bottom of the tutorial under comments.  That way I can share my answers with everyone.  (Don't be afraid to ask me even the most obvious questions, I have been known to leave a step out here and there....) For this project I am going to show you the general steps to take so that you can make your pillow any size to fit your space.

Step 1:
Finding your inspiration fabric.  You will need approximately 2 yards for a pillow this size.

Step 2:
Cutting out your pieces. I like to use round household objects usually found in my kitchen to create circles...for this project I used a pie pan for the diameter of the circle.  Trace the circle with a fabric pencil, and then cut it out.  All other measurements come from this cut.

Cut out the rest of your pieces.  For this step you need to determine the circumference of your circle.  The first way you can do this is by measuring the diameter of the circle (the length of the entire circle through the center point) So in this case, 10 inches.  Multiply that number by pi (3.14) and you will have a length of 31.4 inches.  Add one inch for seam allowance so we need to cut our long piece of fabric 32.4 inches long.  The long strips are for the self cording.  (Cut them 2 inches longer than your circumference, and 2 inches wide)

If you are terrible at math like me, you can do it this way too...

Pin your circle to your remaining long piece of fabric.  As you follow your circle, you will be gathering the length of the rectangle. Add one inch to allow for seam allowance, then cut.

Step 3:

Sew your cording.  Use your zipper foot, and put the needle in the left most position.  (I sew this entire pillow with my zipper foot in the left most postition so I can be right up on the cord).

Sew cord to the circle piece.  Repeat.

Sew your zipper into the long rectangular piece. I am going to assume you know how to sew in a zipper.  If you don't leave me a comment and I will write a zipper tutorial.

Sew long rectangular piece together.  (Sew fabric together on either side of the zipper.)

Sew rectangular piece to the round pieces.

Your pillow case is finished!  Now follow the steps omit the cording step to make the pillow form.  I always stuff with feathers. (I buy cheap down pillows and use the feathers in my custom pillow forms) Because this pillow is so large, I used two standard queen pillows to fill this one form.  I am able to buy pillow forms at Ollies for $6.99 each.  This is the most expensive part of the project.

Stuff pillow form in case, and ENJOY!

Extra Long Lumbar Pillow

I am having a hard time doing anything but gardening these days;  it is just so beautiful outside.   As an extra bonus my mother just brought me an entire trunk full of perennials from her garden.  So if my posts seem a little spread out, I am sorry.  Today I thought I would share with you the extra long lumbar pillow I just made for my little man's room. I am seeing long lumbar pillows everywhere these days.  On beds and couches, it just does not matter. They add so much personality to a any space.  The only problem with these pillows is how expensive they are to have custom made even though they really are not THAT expensive to make! This one cost me less than $20 for the materials including the custom pillow form. Think of how expensive it would be to buy. Check out the impact one single pillow can have on a space.

When I was showing Kandi my little man's room, she and I both agreed it needed a pop of color. Here is a picture of his pillows before....

Cute, midcentury inspired fabric, but lacking color.  I really do love these pillows, so I kept them in the room, but moved them to another corner.  You will have to wait just a little longer for the final reveal to see where they ended up finding homes.

Of course I am still missing his headboard, so you cannot get the complete feel for the space but doesn't this pillow change the entire look and feel of the bed?

I want to show you a couple of pillows that helped inspire this new addition.....

If I can stay out of the garden long enough, I will be able to share the entire room makeover in the next week. If you would like me to write a tutorial so you too can make a pillow like this, please let me know by leaving me a comment.

Foyer Reveal

My foyer is finished and I can't wait to share it with you. In the scheme of things, this room has come together rather quickly.  I hope you enjoy the pictures of my new space!

View looking down from my balcony.

Before

Unfortunately I did not have the budget to replace this ugly chandy!  A new one  is definitely on my wish list!  But until then....I guess I will have to keep looking past it.

I love the new wall color! I painted the walls Wheat Bread by Behr.  I have used this color in a couple other rooms, and I love the way it plays gray to beige.  It is the perfect GREIGE.  Before all of my trim blended into the walls, but now the trim pops!

From this view the room still looks really bare, I guess that means I will need to continue to reveal this room at a later date.

I brought back in the dresser and mirror.  They fit well in the space, and with my tight budget of $1200, I needed to reuse, and re- purpose a couple items. I am still looking for a pair of matching lamps to put on the dresser, I live in a little town with few shopping options, sometimes I find it is best to be patient and wait for the perfect find, and not force the first thing I find to work.

Before

I normally have white orchids in this over sized silver punch bowl, but my hubby came home with 3 beautiful purple orchids, he is just so sweet, how could I take them back because they don't match my new carpet?! Sometimes good design has to take a back seat to a sweet hubby!

I bought this beautiful silver-plated punch bowl at an estate store about a year ago for $85!  I loved it from the moment I saw it.  The inside of the bowl is scratched up, so eventually I will need to have it re- silvered but for now it makes the most gorgeous planter!

I have a confession to make, things don't stay in one place too long in my house.  I wrote this blog post a couple weeks ago, and tonight my guy surprised me with three beautiful "Dreamsicle" orchids.  They look fantastic in the foyer with my rug.  I snapped this pic. with my iPhone, at night...sorry! It was just too good not to share.  As you can see the arrangement still needs a little work!

As a funny little side, while I was working on arranging these beauties Grandma was eating a cutie orange, it took me a moment to realize that although the orchids look like a dreamsicle, they don't smell like a dreamsicle.  I might hide a bowl of peeled oranges under the dresser just to mess with guests!  Heehee! It really is the little things in life isn't it.

We purchased this rug in Farmville VA, at Greenfront furniture.  Greenfront is quite an experience.  They are known to have the largest selection of Persian rugs in the United States and at the best price.  Imagine rooms full of  thousands of rugs.  It can be a bit overwhelming.  It is hard enough to find a rug that I like, but I am trying to let my husband be a part of our design decisions.  Sometimes I really struggle with this.  I have an idea of what I want a space to look like, I have planned and thought about my choices for days.  Then I tell him, and sometimes my vision and his do not line up.  He can be my most difficult client! :) But with that said, this is his home too, and he needs to feel comfortable in our space, so when his preference and mine don't line up, that is okay, I need to just keep on readjusting the plan. We chose a rug with the main background color as coral, so the foyer would flow into the livingroom.  Here is a picture of my formal living room that was taken over the holidays.

Can you see the coral in my livingroom rug? Walls are Pale Smoke, another Bejamin Moore color; and a favorite of Kandi and mine.  She recently painted her playroom in the same color.  Playroom Reveal

I pulled this settee in from another room.  I have always loved this piece of furniture but I just did not have the right place for it until now. I am really struggling with its new skirt.  If you are a frequent reader of our blog, you know that some of our projects work-out, and some need to be thrown out.  I think this skirt is headed for the door!  Let me show you what it is covering.

Isn't this fabric horrible!  Talk about 1970s!  I made the skirt because as the new cushion shifts around on the bench, the deck and all it's 1970's glory peaks out for an unwanted visit.

Here is the bench with out the skirt.  I am sorry about the quality of the photo I took this picture at night. I made a new cover for the cushion, and I think it might be time to take this little lady off to my upholstery shop to have the deck updated so I can rid myself of the 1970s once and for all.

It was a sunny afternoon, so I snapped a quick pic of the settee.

A few new throw pillows.

I love this pillow.  I made it from a vintage monogrammed hand towel.  I especially like the little ruffles!  I think Kandi would approve.  She has a thing for ruffles. If you are new to our blog check out her post Roses and Ruffles Pillow.

Finally a little art for my walls.  I don't think one can ever go wrong with a pair of vintage bird prints. As you saw in an earlier picture, this space will not be fully complete until the rest of my walls have some jewelery too.  I look forward to sharing this space with you as I continue to add and change it in the future.  Thanks for coming on this journey with me. Now that this project is finished hopefully I can focus on My Little Man's Makeover!

Rebekah

Budget Breakdown:
Painter: $775 (Remember my ceilings are 21 feet off the floor, and I had them painted in Benjamin Moore's Cloud Cover)Price included all materials.
Rug:$475
All other items were repurposed!  So my grand total $1250.  Not bad!
