An Owl Friend Tutorial

A couple of weeks ago I introduced you to my Owl Friend. Well I am finally back to show you how to make one of your own....stay w/ me this is a long tutorial, but I have a little give away at the end.

Personally I think this little owl I made for my friend's baby's first birthday might be my favorite!  She is just so cute! (The baby, and the owl of course!)

Before I show you how I made my little owl friend, I want to give credit to where credit is due. I got my idea for this little guy from two fantastic owls tutorials....I have made a few changes, and that is what I am going to show you today!

My Cotton Creations

Here we goooooooo....this is a long tutorial.

Step 1: I used My Cotton Creations pattern. If you follow her link, she has a PDF file that you can download for free. The pattern is really small, so I took it into my local copy store, and had them blow it up 4 times its original size. The only thing her pattern is missing is the legs. (More on that later!)


Step 2: Cut out your shapes. The four identical shapes on the left side of the picture are the legs. I don't have a pattern for these legs. I like my legs long, so I made the leg section approx. 6" long, with a rounded head.  I originally made a three-toed foot with leg but velvet slips around, I found I was more successful if I sewed the toes than cut off the extra material...I have a few pictures later on in the tutorial.

Step 3: Sew on your parts...(okay that sounded a little wierd!)

1. Bodice/Belly

2. Wings

3. Nose

4. Outer Eye

5. Sew on buttons for the inner eye

6. I found it easiest to sew the outline of a foot. I have tried this several ways, don't try to cut out the toes first, the fabric has a tendancy to shift.

7. Then cut off the extra fabric

8. Use a dowel, or pencil to flip the leg right-side-out & stuff with poly-fill. I like to sew the legs onto the owl before I sew the back and front peices together. (Sorry I don't have a picture)

9. Pin front and back peices together, and sew. Leave an opening at the bottom of your owl, so you can flip your bird. (Yes I really did just write that).

10. I like to serge my edges then turn your bird right-side-out

11. Fill the body of your owl with Poly-Fill

12. Sew the opening closed

Finished!

Because I feel so bad that I have not been able to share C's room with you, I have decided to give away an owl friend.
